The Philadelphia Eagles placed former St. Augustine High School and University of Florida kicker Caleb Sturgis on injured reserve Tuesday with a hip flexor injury.

Philadelphia agreed to terms with former University of Memphis kicker Jake Elliott off the Cincinnati Bengals’ practice squad, the Eagles announced on their website.

Elliott was the Bengals’ fifth-round pick this year.

The Eagles could bring Sturgis back later this season. Teams are allowed to bring back two players from IR after the player misses eight weeks.

If Sturgis is one of those players, he would be eligible to practice again Oct. 29 and be available to play Nov. 19 against the Dallas Cowboys following Philadelphia’s bye week.

Sturgis suffered the injury in Sunday’s win over Washington on the opening kickoff, the Associated Press reported.

He missed the second of his three extra-point attempts, but converted all three of his field-goal attempts, including a 52-yarder. He was also good from 42 and 33 yards.

When the Eagles scored their last touchdown in the closing minutes of their 30-17 win against the Washington Redskins, they went for two points instead of sending Sturgis out there.

“I didn’t feel comfortable,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. “Again, obviously he had to kick off after that, but I wanted to just limit the number of kicks. He was OK to gut it out on that last kick and that’s why it was a mortar sky kick in that situation. But yeah, he did an admirable job of finishing that game.”

After the game, Sturgis insisted he was fine.

“It was just my hip,” he said. “Everything should be OK.”

But a source told Philly.com on Monday that an MRI showed a hip flexor tear.

Sturgis would have kicked against former St. Joseph Academy kicker Cairo Santos on Sunday, when the Eagles visit the Kansas City Chiefs.
